A Conversation About Autism With a Little Girl on the Spectrum

Kate has autism. With numbers like 1 in 68 on the autism spectrum you might know someone like Kate. If you don’t, here’s a little crash course. Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by deficits in three main areas: communication, socialization and restricted and repetitive behaviours. As you can imagine all of these areas overlap in many ways. Autism presents uniquely in every individual affected. Having said that, we can only tell of our own experiences and we sincerely help it hopes you understand a little more about autism. As mentioned, autism is a communication disorder, so discussing the terms of her autism is relatively difficult for Kate. She prefers simple and direct questions and she can usually come up with a pretty great answer. Enjoy the transcript of one of our most recent conversations below: Me: Hey Baby, want to talk for a bit? Kate: Oh, Mama. I fought (thought) you were reading. Silly Mama. I do want to talk. Me: What do you want to talk about? Kate: What did you said that to me? (This is a great example of how the words are there but she can’t quite get them in the right order or at the right time.) Me: Is there anything you want to talk about? Kate: I don’t know. Me: Can we talk about autism? Kate: Sure Me: What is autism? Kate: Oh autism. It’s just…..It’s just my best brain (brain). (I always like to use my best brain brain). I can show you, too. Me: Does autism bother you sometimes? Kate: Boffer? No, sometimes I get wrinkles in my heart. That is a little hurt for my heart but I fink it’s not bad. Me: What kinds of things make wrinkles in your heart? Kate: Well, if I want to sing and I might not always can sing or go to the toy store. Me: How should people treat you? Kate: Ummm. Mostly, I fink (think) ice-cream but sometimes, chocolate. Me: Err, okay, let me try this again. Are you the same as everyone else? Do you do all the same things? Kate: Same fings? I don’t be the same. I be Kate, silly goose. Me: Are you happy, Kate? Kate: Sometimes I fink (think) I could be more happier if I could go to the toy store. Me: Is there anything you’d like people to know about autism? Kate: No, but would you imagine if a shark would eat a flower and then it could come out his butt!! Me: Do you know how much I love you? Kate: Yes. It’s not much but it’s a start. We plan on being open and honest with her about her autism and offer her any and all support available. She’s just beginning to question some of the things that make her different and if we can make her feel confident, strong and safe as she grows than we will have done our job.

My Baby Boy Wants a Dolly

My son’s third birthday is coming up and he has one thing on his wish list — a baby doll. He doesn’t want the latest Star Wars action figures or the newest Lego sets. He wants a soft, cuddly baby doll that he can wrap in one of his old blankets and carry around as a friend. I intend to get him just that. While my parents would never imagine getting my brothers something pink, let alone a doll, I on the other hand didn’t even bat an eyelash. Why? I don’t want him growing up thinking that being affectionate or caring is just a “woman” thing. I want him to be able to express himself and know that he can achieve whatever he wants — gender roles aside. Perhaps he wants a doll because he sees his father have such a hands on roll being a dad and an uncle — carrying, feeding, playing, soothing and changing babies on the regular. Whatever the case may be, who am I to deny his request? There are so many ideas and constructs that imposed on children at a young age. Why let this be one of them? I can’t wait to watch him open his present on his birthday. I know I’m making the right choice. Moms, would you buy your son a doll?

Mealtime Manners: The Basics Every Kid Should Know

Learning manners at a young age offers kids the chance to understand what is acceptable from the very beginning. Manners are very important in a child’s life and it is a smart decision to teach kids about the basics at an early age. Kids should have knowledge of basic table manners for mealtimes by the age of 5 years old so they can learn what is appropriate and what isn’t appropriate when joining other people at the table. Be Polite, Wait It is important to teach kids to wait for others to sit down at the table and before beginning to eat. It is very polite for people to wait for everyone to be seated and comfortable before starting their meal. It shows a sense of respect to other people sitting at the table. No “Weird” Noises Kids need to know that noises such as burping are not an acceptable action to do at the dinner table or any table for that matter. Teach them to excuse themselves if they ever feel the need to make any personal “noise” at the table. All Limbs in Place Kids should sit properly when eating dinner and this includes placing feet directly on the ground. Sitting cross-legged or placing one foot on the chair is never acceptable table manners. No “See-food” This is a favorite among siblings. “See-food” is when a child wants to show their chewed up food to their brother, sister or friend and make a joke of it. Remind your kids how important it is to keep their mouths closed while chewing and that showing a chewed up mouthful is disgusting for others to see. Be Present Being present at the table includes no texting, video games, phone calls, or any other device usage. (This goes for Mom and Dad too!) Teach kids to leave all of their devices and toys in their rooms and to keep them off the table. Provide them with the understanding that mealtime is for being with family and for communication. What basic manners do you teach your child? Let us know!

Traveling With Your Child. Tips on Handling Jet Lag

As adults, most of us have experienced jet lag and the effect it has on our sleep and wakefulness. Jet Lag is a condition that results in a disturbance or imbalance in our body’s natural “biological clock” which is caused by traveling to different time zones. Our bodies operate on a 24- hour cycle called Circadian Rhythms. These rhythms are influenced by the rising and setting of the sun, exposure to natural sunlight and help dictate when we sleep and when we are awake. When we travel to a new time zone we arrive at our destination much quicker than our bodies are able to adapt. It takes a few days for our circadian rhythms to adjust and shift our biological schedule. This lapse is called Jet Lag. Babies and children are certainly no exception and will also feel the effects of jet lag. Here are some tips on how to handle their sleep and help them adjust. 1-Make sure your baby is well rested before your trip. Give yourself enough time to get your child on a consistent sleep schedule and use sleep training techniques to iron out any sleep issues before you leave. This will help ensure that your child is well rested and make it easier to adapt to the new time zone. 2-Set your watch to the local time as soon as you arrive. Get your child onto local time as quickly as possible. It will take a few days to adjust so it’s ok to be more relaxed with your schedule. Follow your baby’s cues, however start to get them sleeping on their usual schedule but in local time sooner than later. Resist the urge to compare what time it is “at home” 3- Comforts of home. Bring your child’s bedtime items from home. Their sleep sac, or blankies. Their favorite lovie and bedtime story books and I always advise my clients to travel with either a portable black out shade or some good quality garbage bags and tape ,so that we can ensure a sleep conducive environment wherever you are. 4- Get Outside! One of the best ways to help your body clock adjust is to have exposure to natural sunlight during wakeful hours . On the other side of that coin, you will want to be in reduced lighting or darkness during evening hours . Enjoy your time and don’t worry too much about schedules while you are away, you will simply get back on track when you get home .Travelling with children doesn’t have to be stressful. Implement these simple tips and give it a few days to kick in and before you know it you will have to do it all over again upon your return! Safe travels!

Best ‘Neutral’ Gifts for Both Boys and Girls

As parents we can see that our little ones can play with a doll and in the same day play soccer, build a paper house and set up a train set. If they have access to those toys, they will play with them. If we offer our kids a variety of toys that are not necessarily legos for boys and barbies for girls, we also are giving them the opportunity to play, beyond the color and the gender. This is becoming more common everyday, and which is very positive for children. If this year you want to add some color to your daughter’s pink room or help your son find joy playing with toys other than cars, legos and lightsabers, here are some ideas: Little Tikes Castle Adventures Sandbox This medieval castle is the perfect sandbox for imaginative play (and great for those who love sandboxes like me!) . With this toy, your kids can build sandcastles, tunnels and anything they want to create. Recommended for builders 3 years old and up. Playhut Luxury House

Top 5 Reasons Your Elf on the Shelf Didn’t Move Last Night

Many of our elves have returned this December and they are busy delighting our children with their silly and creative hiding spots. This is a true sign of the season and we look forward to it every year, but how come there are days when the elves don’t move? Here are the top five reasons your little friend might have decided to stay put. Your Children Have Been Just Too Good It’s a long, long, long trip back to the North Pole to report to Santa every evening. Even with elf magic there are line ups to speak with Santa and chores to be done before they can return. When your children are as good as gold, there is really little motivation for the elf to move from his or her comfy spot. Your Children Have Been Just Too Naughty The elves are rooting for our kids so when our little ones are particularly naughty, the elf may decide that he’d rather not report the particular incident to Santa and give the children another day to make better decisions. Your Elf Sustained a Minor Injury Whilst Exploring Elves are curious little creatures. When we are sleeping, just before they head out on their long journey back, they may decide to explore your house a little. There have been reports of elves getting stuck in Barbie cars, swatted by angry cats and even falling out of the Christmas tree! Don’t worry, though, no serious injuries have ever been reported. Your Elf Slept Through His Departure Time There are many, many elves, that must make the trip back to the North Pole each evening. It’s really a very organized venture. Your elf has a specific departure time, in order to make sure that Santa is not bombarded by all the elves at once. If the sleepy little guy misses his time, he may choose to stay the night instead. Your Elf is Having an Elfing Good Time Elves wait all year long for the chance to come back to see their favourite kids. Sometimes, it is just too much fun to watch the kids as their excitement builds for the big day. Some elves have even been known to stay put all season because they just can’t bear to be apart from their best kid friends. If this is the case, worry not, Santa sends a messenger elf to check up on the loyal little fella, just to make sure his kids are staying on the nice list. If your elf doesn’t move occasionally, don’t fret; you can be sure he has his reasons.
