Traditional Toys vs Electronic Toys: ¿Which Ones Help More with Language?

Probably your baby or toddler received tons of toys this past Christmas and some of them are full of noise and lights. Many of those toys are sold with the promise or incentive of being ‘educational’, helping kids to develop new abilities. But a new study suggests that it doesn’t quite always work like that. I remember very well when a therapist for kids told me to avoid toys that make noise and opt for more traditional ones. The study I read about this particular issue explains that playing with regular books (not digitals) and wooden toys, blocks and puzzles can help more with the quantity and quality of language skills a toddler will obtain rather than the electronic toys Anna V. Sosa, Ph.D., of Northern Arizona University, Flagstaff, and her colleagues conducted an experiment involving 26 parent-infant pairs with children between 10 to 16 months old. The results were clear: Children vocalized less while playing with electronic toys than with books. Also, adults say less words and there is less conversational play. Even the study is relatively small, provides an idea of how necessary it is for parents to not give up on traditional toys, traditional playing and especially to keep reading to the kids as much as they can. I know in the digital era, playing with electronic toys and tablets are things almost impossible to avoid, but the study recommends parents don’t underestimate the power of the more traditional toys and the power of playing together; without a gadget that tells you what to do or a square full of lights and noise that definitely catches the attention of the toddler, but does not make him or her more talkative or communicative. The study by Sosa was published in the most recent issue of JAMA Pediatrics and concludes with these recommendations: Playing with electronic toys is associated with decreased quantity and quality of language input compared with play with books or traditional toys. To promote early language development, playing with electronic toys should be discouraged. Traditional toys may be a valuable alternative for parent-infant play time if book reading is not a preferred activity.

Gifts For Kids Who Love Science and Technology

By now your 3 year old knows how to use the tablet better than you, and your tween speaks a language about new technology that you can’t even try to understand. But still it is always a good idea to bring home toys and games to inspire our kids and our family to learn more about technology and science. One way to introduce them to other ways to use technology, besides playing with the tablet or the console, are toys that were created with the purpose to entertain our kids, yet teach them the principles of mechanics, science and engineering. These are some of the products that you should consider try this Holiday Season: Snap Circuits Jr. SC-100 Electronics Discovery Kit This kit comes with more than 30 components to create 101 different electronic projects. The pieces (snap wires, slide switches, an alarm circuit, a music integrated circuit, and a speaker) snap together easily to plastic grid. These components let the kids create working circuit boards just like the ones found inside electronic devices that are at home (like a radio, TV or computer).

5 Affordable Tech Gifts for Teens

Teens are notoriously hard to buy for. We can safely assume that technology is a good bet but much of what is out there today is far too expensive for any reasonable budget. However, there are some really great and affordable technologies out there, too. Here are just five that will please your teen and your bank account. Jam Banz These brightly coloured Slap Banz are portable blue tooth speakers. Teens can slap them on and take their music wherever they go. Sure, you might rather they have some wireless earbuds so you don’t have to share in their, likely questionable, taste in music, but for the price difference, these slap bands are the way to go. Just encourage them to try them out at a friend’s house, and hope their friend’s parents don’t return the favour. Get them here. Plush Speaker Animals Just because they are teens doesn’t mean they won’t love these Faux Fur Rockin’ Speaker Animals. It’s the cool way to still feel like a kid but with a technology edge. These adorable speaker animals would make a great gift for any teen, or adult for that matter. In fact, that Yeti just made my wish list. Get them here. Bluetooth Bunny Speaker Sure, these gift ideas are mostly to do with music but what else are teens into? Wait, don’t answer that. Just check out this sweet bunny bluetooth speaker. It’s got a high end look and a low point price. You can’t go wrong with those features. Get it here These new age polaroid cameras are all the rage. You might as well jump on the bandwagon and put one under the tree. Teens can be very creative with these cameras and their pictures won’t get lost in cyberspace but have a place in their room for everyone to see. Get it here. This super cool levitating globe (that works through reverse magnetism) will make studying geography a lot more fun. It’s a great conversation piece for a dorm room, too. If you’re feeling like you’ve spent enough on different ways for them to listen to their tunes, than this might be a good option for you. Get it here.

Technology Shaming: When it’s Okay to Look at Your Phone

Okay, stop. This technology shaming is getting completely out of hand. We parents feel bad enough about our failings without being shamed every time we glance at our phone in the presence of our children. Here are some facts that I know to be true about raising children in a world where technology is literally and constantly at our fingertips. Some of you will disagree. Most of you are reading this from your phone and will nod in solidarity. Times When it is Okay to Look at Your Phone During Peer to Peer Pretend Play If your child is playing with other children and heavily immersed in peer to peer pretend play, which is wonderful for their development, by the way. Go you, for setting up this play date. You may check your phone. You DO NOT need to direct their play. This would, in fact, stunt their creativity and you wouldn’t want to do that. Relax, you aren’t missing out on a ‘moment’ by glancing down at your phone to see if J.Crew has a sale on this week. During Basketball, Dance, or Flute Practice When your children are partaking in the lessons you spend a fortune on to ensure they are well-rounded, you have every right to take a breather and check the score. If it isn’t the big game, or the recital, than you should be fine to take a break from watching every move they make. No one would look twice if you cracked open your copy of Bleak House but reading the ‘funniest tweets from women this week’ garners you some serious judgment. When Your Children Are Having Screen Time Stop pretending that you wouldn’t hear of it. Whether it is Walt Disney’s Biography or the latest episode of Dino Truck Posse our children enjoy a little screen time, too. Don’t overdo it, of course, but if you feel that you have to watch every episode of the aforementioned Dino Truck Posse along side your child, than you’ll be punishing yourself enough for that screen time you snuck in at their Karate class. Take the thirty minutes to get your Candy Crush on, or whatever you’re into. The laundry can wait. Times When it is Not Okay to Look at Your Phone During Meals I’m not going to say I’ve never slipped up in this area but I will say that I always feel really bad when I do. Meal time, whatever that means for your family, should be a technology free time to talk and connect with each other. This is not as easy as it sounds, so allow yourself a slip up now and then. Otherwise, try and maintain a no technology rule when you eat. You’re kids will grow to love this time with you. While Walking Down the Street Seriously, just don’t do this. If you have your child by the hand or in a stroller and you are navigating the outside world you should have your eyes and your full attention on your child. This goes for waiting at the crosswalk, too, so don’t think you can sneak a peak. When Your Kids Are Asking For Your Attention Seems obvious enough, right? If your kids are reaching out and your nose is stuck in a phone they might start to think that phone is more important than they are. Show them you have your priorities straight and there is nothing in this world that could be more interesting than whatever they have to say at that moment. Likely, there are other times when phone use is frowned upon (wedding, job interview, funeral) but that’s another list altogether. Technology shaming has gone too far, in my opinion and we need to stand up and say: “I know how to use my technology appropriately, thank you very much!” Besides, who’s watching their kids while they are busy shaming us?

5 Ways to Protect Your Family Online

Internet safety is a family issue and it should not be taken lightly. In these modern times, it is so easy for kids to get into troublesome situations online, whether they come across adult only websites or end up being cyber bullied. There are numerous ways that you can protect your family from dangerous situations that may occur when using the internet and once you act on them, you and your family will feel much safer. Limit the Usage of the Internet in the Home It is important that there is a cut off time for the internet. Allow your children to use the internet for research purposes, not for games. When kids go searching for games, they may end up launching all sorts of damaging programs in your computer, as well as see pop ups of things they shouldn’t be seeing at their age. There are so many damaging websites on the internet that can tarnish the innocence of young minds and create all sorts of problems with your very expensive computer or laptop. When you introduce your child to using the internet outside of the classroom, monitor how they use it. Teach them how to find kid-friendly resources and bookmark places that they can easily access for information. Give them a time limit so that they stay on the mission they are on and do not ‘wander’ around the internet. Monitor Your Child’s Social Media Accounts While this may seem like an act of an overprotective parent, it is a smart act. Kids under the age of 13 shouldn’t really be exposed to websites like Facebook, Twitter, and MySpace. If, and when you allow your child to open accounts in the social media world, it is best to keep your eyes peeled. You may request that you have access to their accounts until they are of a certain age such as 14 or 15 when they understand online safety a bit more and when more privacy is required. Keep in mind that child predators have ways of breaking through online barriers so they can send messages through to accounts. A child that is too young to understand that this may be a dangerous person approaching them online may be in danger. Talk About Online Activities Keep an open vocabulary about online activities in the household. Ask your kids what types of things they come across online and if there is anything that has ever made them uncomfortable. Explain that you have had strangers approach you online and tell them how you deal with the situation when it happens. The more kids know about the different dangerous scenarios that can happen online, the more they will have the knowledge to stay away from scam artists, predators, and strangers in general. Use Software to Protect Young Minds If you can purchase software for your computers in the home, it would provide you with more security in general. Many internet safety software programs such as Safe Eyes, monitor, filter, and block out specific websites that are not for kids, tweens, and teenagers. We may not be able to protect everything our kids come across online, but there are ways to provide more internet safety in the home and in the place where kids have more access and time to roam around the web. Every single action we take to prevent our kids from falling into dangerous online situations helps, and as parents, we can relax a little bit knowing our home computers are safe to use. How do you protect your family from the dangers of being online? We would love to hear!
